예전에 한번 봤던 글인데 kimatg님이 올린신 글에 링크가 돼 있어서 다시 보게 되는군요. 뭐, 일단 동감하는 부분도 있고 그렇지 못한 부분도 있습니다만 업계부분에 대해서는 이 글을 보시면 좀 이해가 가실듯 합니다.
제가 업계 전문가도 아니고 뭐라고 하기는 그렇습니다만, 여기에 조금 추가하고 싶은 부분이 있더군요. 많은 분들이 애니업계가 TV광고로 돈을 번다고 생각하시는 경우가 많습니다. 하지만 이 기사에서도 다뤘지만 애니는 보통 방영시간을 사는 경우가 많습니다(코난, 도라에몽, 사자에상 같은 경우는 반대). 그렇기 때문에 값이 싼 새벽쪽의 방영대를 구입, 하지만 당연히 광고비는 적죠. (예전에 이 부분에 대해서 좀 더 자세히 나온 기사가 있었는데, 잘 기억이 않나는군요 ^^;;) 그러면 제작비는 간당간당, 광고로 들어오는 돈더 적고, 애니 왜 만드나 하시겠죠? 방송 말고 중요한 밥벌이가 있기 때문이죠. DVD와 장난감이 그것입니다. 히트 or 미스식으로 미스면 적자지만, 히트만 하면 DVD 및 장난감으로 굉장히 돈을 벌거든요. 그렇기 때문에 스폰서들도 계속 손을 대는 겁니다. (참고로 DVD는 일본내에서 대략 5000장이 넘어가면 이익을 남길 수 있는 정도라고 합니다. 결국 일본에서도 애니는 마이너거든요. 왜그렇게 DVD가 비쌀 이유가 있는지 알 수 있죠;;;)
그러면 왜 일본에서 그렇게나 우리나라 애니팬, 즉 외국에서 불법으로 동영상을 감상하는 인간들을 그렇게 싫어하는지 이해가 가실겁니다. 우리나라가 뭐 안사주는 것으로 유명하지 않습니까? 그래도 북미는 DVD가 팔리죠. 우리나라는 완전 초토화. 일본에서도 nico주라고 니코니코에서 동영상 보는 인간들 곱게 보지 않습니다. 그래도 일본 내에서는 동영상을 받아보더라도 재밌으면 사주는 경우가 많기 때문에 그리 치명적이지 않지만(위에서 말씀드렸듯이 방송으로 들어오는 돈은 많지 않으므로), 외국은 다르죠.
마지막으로 한국 이야기를 좀 하죠. 우리나라는 일본에 비해서 구매층의 %가 너무나 적습니다. 하지만 그렇다고 북미처럼 인구가 많아서 이걸 극복할 수 있는 정도가 되는 것도 아닙니다. 그러면 어떻게 되느냐... 외국에서 DVD를 팔때는 보통 라이센스 fee를 내고 담당회사가 DVD를 팔게 됩니다. 그러면 장사가 안돼는 한국은 이 라이센스비를 많이 내는 것은 불가능합니다. 그리고 한국에서 일본 DVD 가격 그대로 나오면 사람들이 안사죠. 가격을 내려야 합니다. 그럼 일본측에서는 어떻게 보일까요? 라이센스비도 많이 못받아먹고, DVD가격은 낮춰서 역수입 경계까지 해야하고... 좋게 보이지 않죠. 반대로 우리나라는 라이센스비만큼은 벌어야 하는데 1000장도 못파는 나라에서 뭘 얼마나 벌겠습니까? 장사가 안돼는 겁니다.
뭐, 결론은 DVD나 장난감을 사줘야 애니업계는 먹고 살 수 있다는 겁니다.

This is an article about Japanese and Korean anime industry which I've read long time ago, but kimatg's recent post has reminded me of this. I have mixed opinion about this article but I think one would get a better understanding about Japanese anime industry after reading it (unfortunately, it's in Korean;;;, but to sum it up, it shows the relationship of producers and broadcasters and those who work in the industry. I think there are numerous english articles about these kind of stuff, so you might want to check it out if you are interested)
I'm not an expert when it comes to details of anime industry, but I would like to add few things on top of this article. Many people think anime producers make money by TV ad, and that's a big misconception. Most of the times, they BUY the timeslot to air their series and that's why they pick the cheap after midnight time-slot and obviously that won't give them much of an income when it comes to ad fees(Some major shows such as Conan, Doraemon, and Sajae-san, are exceptions). So, with low budget from sponsors and low TV-ad income why the heck would they make anime in the first place? It's because they have other source of income: DVD and toys. It's hit or miss. They either make big with tons of DVD sales and toys or go red. That's why sponsors are keep giving them money. (BTW, apparently about 5000 DVD sale could give them a profit. You can tell why the heck R2 DVDs are so expensive;;;)
So, you can see why Japan hates fansubbers so much. Fansubbers, who don't really buy that much DVDs, and watch stuff for free.... I mean, it's obvious why they are being hated. At least in North America, thanks to large population, there are some DVD sales. Even in Japan, they don't like those who watch anime on niconico. At least Japanese people buy DVDs even if they watch it from something like niconico, and since they don't earn that much from TV-ads anyways, it doesn't affect them TOO much, but in the case of foreign country, it's a little different.
In the case of Korea, target consumers are just too small. When it comes to selling DVDs in non-Japansese country, the licensors pay license fee, then sell the DVDs. Korea can't pay much because DVDs don't sell well. Of course they can't sell it at a high price like Japan, because that's gonna cause even less sell. So how does it look like to Japanese? They can't get too much license fee, and they have to think about reverse importation due to cheap foreign dvds. Pain in the butt. On the other hand, Korean licensors will have to at least earn the license fee back, but they can't even sell 1000 copies, and how much can they earn from that? It's just a bad business.
What's my point? My point is, in the end, anime producers make a living pretty much straight from DVDs and toys.
