Kung Fu Cooking Girls is a short 9 min original animation movie produced by Wolf Smoke, currently streamed on youtube. It is more of an experimental piece to try out a new animation technique and demonstrate their animation skills rather than a story piece. So story telling is bare minimum but animation is very well done. Quite dynamic. It uses a vibrant and transparent coloring and it reminded me of the illustrator okama. Worth checking out if you just want to watch a nice anime action sequence. It would be nice to see these guys working on a bigger project. They also have another short animation called Full of Cats and a pilot movie Mountain Shu up on their channel.

I know I already wrote an impression post after watching the first ep from nicolive but I wanted to write another one because there were few things that felt different this time around. First of all, watching it in 720p, I can see that color look much better. It seems like nicolive video had a bit of a problem with color tone (check this comparison. Bottom one is nicolive: link). Screenshots above are taken at 1920 X 1080 screen resolution. Also, animation looked a ltitle better this time around. I can see that here and there, movements are quite smooth. Still, I think it is still within a TV quality boundary (very good one though, perhaps OVA quality-like). Now, one thing that REALLY bothered me was consistent background static noise. Except when the OP song is playing, I can hear it all the time. At first, I thought it was intentional but I really don't think that's the case. This was quite noticeable too because there isn't much BGM playing for this episode and on a supposedly silent situation, static noise really stands out. Oh, yes, and BGM. No wonder why it didn't stand out. There just aren't that many BGM in this episode. Another thing that bothered me was banding, due to the fact that there are lot of dark scenes. It won't be as bad (if there is any present) in BD I would think.

Content wise, this is my second time watching and I enjoyed it more. One of the reason is probably because now that there's an Eng subtitles, I can understand dialogues a little better. It was fun to notice some of the interesting details that I missed the first time as well, ex), when Rintarou checks his cell phone, suddenly static noise appears on the screen, just before Mayuri finds him. Anyways, will definitely check out the second episode but I really wanna know what the heck was up regarding that background audio noise.

OP was pretty good, both visual and song wise. ED visual was plain but I liked the song.

This episode was pre-screened via nicolive.

So... after multiple attempts (and multiple as over 20 times...), I finally got into nicolive channel and watched the first episode. My first impression was: "I don't quite get it." I get the drift but the way each scene is cut, the way the main character talks and act (Main character has 中二病 - childish act of pretending/believing that oneself has superpower or has some kind of special knowledge that others do not have), it was a little hard to follow. Due to the psychotic condition of the main character, I had to think about what is real and what is delusion. That said, first episode doesn't have to explain everything. All it has to do is to grab viewers' interest and the last bit of the episode did trigger that interest. BGM didn't really stand out and no OP/ED. TV broadcast will have OP and ED though. Animation quality was good for a TV series but nothing outstanding I would say. Color tone did feel a little dull but maybe it felt more so due to the low resolution. Overall, it wasn't disappointing but I'll have to watch more episodes to decide wheather or not to import.

Well that was quite good! As far as the episode 1 goes, I actually liked it more than Lucky Star episode 1. Episode 00 had a rather mediocre reputation so I wasn't too excited about the show until I saw the OP early today. OP was simply amazing, both the animation and the song. It was the most exciting OP I've seen in awhile. First episode was true to its genre. I actually had a few loud laughs and overall, I found the episode to be quite entertaining, which is what comedy is all about, so I was very satisfied (Helvetica Standard was quite random though. I guess K.Y. means someone clueless?). Characters are cute and likable, especially the Hakase and Nano combination. They are just too adorable! Production value was top quality as expected from Kyoto Animation.

Oh, and I'm glad that crunchyroll is streaming this in 720p because it looked very good on my TV :)

(C) KAZUKI SAKURABA, HINATA TAKADA, KADOKAWA SHOTEN/ Team GOSICK

Well done:
- Bones did a good job getting the atmosphere right. Characters and background arts feel like they popped straight out of the novel.
- Animation is the usual BONES quality; superb.
- Victorica was very very cute.

Complaints:
- Pace of the story felt quite fast. I already read the novel so that could be the reason why I felt this way.
- Victorica's voice... I was expecting something unique but what we get here is pretty much exactly the same as Mina from Dance in the Vampire Bund. Still, it fits the character I guess.

As I have mentioned already, mystery aspect of the series is not that great. It's all about the relationship between Victorica and Kazuya. If you are disappointed by how easy the first case was, and thinking that perhaps it'll get better later on, don't bother. While the first case is certainly the weaker one, later cases don't get any more interesting or hard to figure out. If you liked watching two cute kids fighting over small things, building a relationship, this is a series for you. Overall, satisfactory but I'm not sure if I would pay KADOKAWA price (9240yen X 12 months) for this.

Officially streamed(I think) on Planetnemo

(C)GALLIMARD Jeunesse Licenced by Nippon Animation Co., Ltd

Rita et Machin is a series of pictures books by Gallimard Jeunesse. It is about daily lives of an imaginative dog Watsit('Nantoka' in Japanese. 'Machin' in French I guess? I don't speak French) and Rita. Animation basically adapted these short stories into short 5 min episodes. I originally thought 5 min would be too short but it seems like a very good length as opening and ending sequences are quite short. Animation style is similar to cartoons like Peanuts but with more watercolor feel to it. Anyways, it seems like the series has captured the traditional American cartoon style quite well. If the English version was aired on a TV, I wouldn't even know it was made in Japan and I wouldn't mind watching this in English dub(since I don't think Japanese voices are good). Actually, I think this kind of easy going kid's show with watercolor/crayon look animation is quite rare in western TV these days. I miss it(then again, I don't follow kid's show so maybe it's not an accurate observation)

Stories were cute and fun. It doesn't try to force feed some educational messages so I liked that about the show. That said, this really is a show targeted for kids. So I'm not sure how many anime fans would embrace it well. Personally, I enjoyed it and would recommend to check it out.

Streaming for these episodes are available on FUNimation channel

Well, finally. What took FUNi so long... I watched the OP on youtube and I just loved the tune and the movie parodies. It showed that the staff has a good sense of humor. I was also quite impressed by Hanazawa Kana's performance in Occult Academy, so I watched the first two episodes with fairly high expectation.

First two episodes are currently streamed on MBS official website

Kiraboshi★! First two episodes were pretty interesting. I did think some of the dialogues/developments were a bit... too flashy perhaps, but I kinda got used to it by episode 2. *Some minor spoilers ahead*

Episode 1 impression:
(C)BONES/STAR DRIVER製作委員会・MBS

- OP was so sudden.
- Love the "zero-dimension" concept. Fantastic visual
- Quite a lot of fanservice.
- Sakana-chan just does what she's told, huh.
- Mecha action scene was great, though it seemed a little short.
- BGM matches well.

Episode 2 impression:
(C)BONES/STAR DRIVER製作委員会・MBS

- Why are all the representitives women other than the head? (Not that I'm complaining...)
- Sakana planet...;;; That just ruins the mood, doesn't it?
- Unlike the previous episode, where Tauban moved like an acrobat, mecha movements felt quite heavy this time around. I have to say, I was a little surprised by the beam weapon ^^;; Oh, and mecha scenes reminded me of Gunbuster 2 a lot.
- I wonder how many Star drivers are there for each group, because Filament already lost two. I have a feeling that the boxing guy will come back though.

Overall, the series felt like Utena with mecha but with a flavor of its own. Definitely enjoying it a lot more than Xam'd. I just hope MBS doesn't block North American viewers. Pretty please...

(C) Tamiki Wakaki/ Shogakukan, Kaminomi project, TV Tokyo

Hmm... First thing that came to my mind after watching this episode was "Fukuyama Jun should have done the voice for Katsuragi..." This seems like a perfect role for him. Anyways, episode itself was okay, but nothing really stood out. Animation quality was great but nothing to cry home about. It's just a well done animation. Same with the music. It's great but not really memorable. Plot, while not boring, didn't have much highlight/twist to it. I wonder if this pattern will continue on every episode, because that will bore people out quite quickly. I guess I'll follow few more episodes to see how it goes.

(C)Lily Hoshino/Gentosha Comics, Zakuro project

Animation quality and visual directing were pretty good in general. Characters move well and I like the color usage. Action scene was well done. Chanting-like BGM and interesting usage of color certainly created a unique feel to it.

Characters were very likable. I did think Zakuro was a little too quick to change her mind about humans but it didn't bother me much. Twins were simply adorable. I was wondering if this would be yet another "good looking jerks abusing girls" type of story but I was glad to see that that wasn't the case. I think overall, atmosphere was quite similar to that of Ouran High school Host Club(which is good, I like Ouran). I couldn't help but laugh out loud when Agemaki said "I can't stand"(by the way, what he said in Japanese was "腰が抜けて" which has an implied meaning that he can't stand because he is scared"). He reminds me of Tamaki from Ouran.

Overall, a decent episode. It was much better than I expected.
